Elaine’s Story
Elaine lives alone and has been working hard to rebuild her life after experiencing domestic and financial abuse.
The trauma Elaine experienced left her feeling vulnerable and anxious about her finances. Over time, this anxiety made it difficult for her to manage bills and day-to-day responsibilities, and she eventually fell into arrears with both her rent and energy bills. This left her facing the risk of disconnection and eviction.
Elaine also lives with anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress, which can make everyday tasks overwhelming. When she was referred to us, she explained that she was not only struggling with debt but was also without some essential household items that would help her feel safe and comfortable in her home. Her washing machine had stopped working, adding further strain to an already difficult situation.
We contacted Elaine within a day of receiving her referral and began supporting her straight away. To relieve some of the immediate pressure, we arranged a supermarket voucher so she could buy food without added stress. We also added her to the Priority Services Register, ensuring her energy supplier is aware of her circumstances and can provide additional support if needed.
We are continuing to work closely with Elaine to address her rent and energy arrears, which together total around £3,000. Clearing these debts will significantly improve her financial stability and provide much-needed peace of mind.
Alongside this, we are arranging replacement household essentials, including a new washing machine and a bed, to help her feel more comfortable and settled in her home as she continues to rebuild her life.
Elaine shared that she has been very pleased with the support she has received through OCTA.
